Nissan Patrol Y63 in Kolkata: Old-School Toughness, New-Age Luxury

Overview

Kolkata has a long memory for cars. This is a city where Ambassadors are still loved, where old families in Alipore and Ballygunge keep cherished vehicles for decades, and where a new car is judged on substance as much as style. The Nissan Patrol fits that sensibility. It has been built continuously since 1951, earned its reputation the hard way in deserts and rallies, and the new Y63 generation pairs that heritage with some of the most advanced technology in any luxury SUV.

Nissan revealed the Y63 in Abu Dhabi in September 2024 and began GCC sales that November. It is the seventh Patrol generation and replaces the Y62 with its 5.6-litre V8. The new car uses a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 on LE trims and a 3.8-litre V6 on SE trims, and its interior is a complete reinvention, centred on twin 14.3-inch screens and Google built-in.

Kolkata's conditions make a strong case for it. The monsoon regularly leaves central streets waterlogged, roads in older neighbourhoods are often uneven, and the city's traffic, from the crush around Gariahat to Puja-season crowds, rewards a car with a commanding view and patient, smooth controls. At the same time, Kolkata's growing eastern suburbs, Salt Lake and New Town, have wide roads where the Patrol's size is no burden at all.

Nissan's Indian arm retails the Magnite and X-Trail through its dealers, yet the Patrol Y63 is neither sold nor officially serviced by Nissan India. Instead, Kolkata buyers can find it through Big Boy Toyz, imported and backed by verified documentation. Kolkata buyers can contact BBT directly to arrange a viewing, compare specifications and go through the paperwork before making a decision.

Model Features

What does the Y63 Patrol offer a buyer in Kolkata? Here are the headline features:

  • Engines: a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 (VR35DDTT) rated at 425 hp and 700 Nm on LE trims, and a 3.8-litre V6 with 316 hp and 386 Nm on SE trims
  • Drivetrain: a 9-speed automatic with full-time four-wheel drive, low range, a rear differential lock and hill descent control
  • Terrain management: six modes, Standard, Eco, Sport, Sand, Mud/Rut and Rock
  • Clearance: 244 mm with 18-inch wheels and 253 mm with 20-inch wheels, a real advantage on Kolkata's monsoon-hit roads
  • Angles: a 32-degree approach angle and 25.5-degree departure angle on 18-inch trims
  • Performance: the twin-turbo reaches 100 km/h in about 6.7 seconds, with a 200 km/h top speed
  • Infotainment: the 28.6-inch Monolith display, two 14.3-inch screens with Google built-in, including Google Maps and Assistant
  • Audio: 12-speaker Klipsch sound on SE Titanium and higher trims
  • Cameras: 3D Around View Monitor with Invisible Hood View, which shows what is beneath the front of the car
  • Driver aids: ProPILOT Assist on Titanium and Platinum trims
  • Suspension: electronically controlled dampers, with optional adaptive air suspension and height adjustment
  • Cabin: eight seats, a power-folding third row, Biometric Cooling, a panoramic roof and 64-colour ambient lighting

The result is an SUV that is as comfortable carrying three generations of a family to a Puja pandal as it is heading down the coast for a beach weekend.

Variants

Patrols in India are usually GCC-specification imports, so they carry Nissan's Gulf trim names. Two engines divide the range, and each is offered in several trims.

  • 3.8-litre V6 versions: XE, SE T2, SE Titanium and SE Platinum City
  • 3.5-litre twin-turbo versions: LE T1, LE T2, LE Titanium, LE Titanium+ and LE Platinum City
  • PRO-4X: a twin-turbo model with an off-road focus
  • Patrol NISMO: the 2026 performance flagship, with 495 hp

In Kolkata, where many luxury cars are chauffeur-driven, the LE Platinum City is a natural choice, with massage seats, a head-up display and quilted leather. Owner-drivers who enjoy the highway towards Digha or Durgapur may prefer the LE Titanium or LE Titanium+, which combine the twin-turbo with Klipsch audio and the full safety suite.

Colours

The Y63 Patrol is offered in seven body colours and four two-tone versions with a black roof. Imported examples commonly come in:

  • Pearl White: elegant and timeless, and the classic Patrol colour
  • Black Pearl: formal and dignified, well suited to a chauffeur-driven car
  • Grey Metallic: practical during the long monsoon, when roads are wet and muddy
  • Blue Metallic: a quieter, more unusual choice

The NISMO has an exclusive Stealth Grey. Colour options depend on trim and model year, so check the finish of any specific car with BBT. The two-tone versions with a contrasting black roof suit the Patrol's upright shape particularly well, and they give a familiar colour a more contemporary edge.

Fuel Efficiency and Mileage

At about 2.7 tonnes, the Patrol will always use a lot of fuel, but the switch from V8 to V6 has improved matters. Nissan's official ratings are close to 10.1 km/l for the twin-turbo and 9.7 km/l for the 3.8-litre. In Kolkata, expect:

  • City: about 5 to 6 km/l in traffic on AJC Bose Road, Park Street or around Gariahat
  • Highway: about 8 to 9 km/l on the Kolkata–Durgapur Expressway or the drive towards Digha

Kolkata's dense traffic and humid summers mean city figures will often sit at the lower end. The 97-litre tank is a genuine advantage for longer trips: a weekend in Mandarmani or Shantiniketan, there and back, should not require a refuelling stop.

For chauffeur-driven owners, a few habits help. Letting the car idle for long periods outside a club or office with the air conditioning running adds up quickly, and Eco mode smooths out the stop-start rhythm of central Kolkata traffic. Over a month that mixes weekday city use with an occasional highway trip, most owners will land in the 6 to 8 km/l range.

Design and Comfort

The Y63 has a bold, contemporary design that marks a clean break from earlier Patrols. Its front end is dominated by a tall, flat grille with strong horizontal bars and razor-thin LED headlamps, the body sides are smooth and slab-like, and the tail is almost vertical. The look is sculptural and imposing, and in a city that appreciates design, from Victorian Park Street facades to modern New Town towers, it draws attention without trying too hard.

The Patrol is a big car: around 5,205 mm long, 2,030 mm wide and nearly 1,950 mm tall, on a 3,075 mm wheelbase. It is comfortable on the wide avenues of Alipore, Salt Lake and New Town, but north and central Kolkata's narrow lanes are better tackled with an experienced driver. Before buying, check that your building's parking and gate clearance can accommodate a vehicle of this size.

Its ground clearance of up to 253 mm is particularly useful in Kolkata. When heavy rain floods low-lying roads, a higher ride lets you see the road surface better and handle broken patches with less risk, though no car should be driven into deep water. The 32-degree approach angle on 18-inch trims also means steep ramps and high kerbs are easily cleared.

Inside, the Patrol is a true eight-seater with three rows that can accommodate adults. The third row folds electrically, and the boot grows from about 577 litres to roughly 2,749 litres with the rear rows folded, plenty of space for luggage on a family holiday or gifts during the festive season. Biometric Cooling adds comfort for front occupants in the humid months, and Platinum City trims offer quilted leather and massage seats for those long, slow drives across the city.

Performance & Engine

The LE Patrol's VR35DDTT 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 produces 425 hp and 700 Nm. Nissan says that is 7 percent more power and 25 percent more torque than the 5.6-litre V8 it replaces, and the torque arrives low in the rev range, so the Patrol feels responsive even at low speeds. Crossing Vidyasagar Setu or merging onto the EM Bypass, it moves with surprising ease for its size.

Out on the highway, the numbers are impressive: 0 to 100 km/h in about 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h. On the Kolkata–Durgapur Expressway, the Patrol cruises quietly, the 9-speed automatic keeping the engine relaxed, and it has plenty in reserve for safe overtakes past trucks and buses.

The 3.8-litre V6 on SE trims offers 316 hp and 386 Nm, reaching 100 km/h in about 7.8 seconds. It is smooth and well suited to city driving, though it lacks the twin-turbo's effortless pull when fully loaded. Sitting above both, the 2026 Patrol NISMO is tuned to 495 hp.

Whichever engine you choose, the Patrol comes with permanent four-wheel drive, a low-range gearbox, a locking rear differential, hill descent control and six terrain modes. For Kolkata owners, Mud/Rut mode and permanent 4WD bring extra security on wet, slippery roads, while low range and hill descent control make the Patrol a capable companion on longer adventures, such as a drive north towards the hills of Darjeeling or the tea gardens of the Dooars.

Interior & Technology

The Y63's interior centres on the Monolith display, a single glass panel containing two 14.3-inch screens that together span 28.6 inches. One is the digital instrument cluster; the other runs Google built-in, so Google Maps can guide you around Kolkata's congestion and waterlogged roads in real time, while Google Assistant handles calls and navigation by voice.

  • Klipsch premium audio with 12 speakers on SE Titanium and higher trims
  • Head-up display and massage seats on Platinum City trims
  • A panoramic roof and 64-colour ambient lighting
  • Optional twin 12.8-inch rear entertainment screens for passengers in the second row
  • 3D Around View Monitor with Invisible Hood View, a real help in tight lanes and crowded parking

For chauffeur-driven owners, the second row is an excellent place to be, with space, entertainment and a view of the sky through the panoramic roof. For owner-drivers, the head-up display and ProPILOT Assist reduce fatigue on long highway drives.

Safety Features

With buses, trams, cycle rickshaws and pedestrians all sharing the road, Kolkata driving demands constant awareness. The Patrol Y63 has seven airbags, including a driver knee airbag, and Titanium and Platinum trims add the full Nissan Safety Shield suite:

  • Intelligent Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, valuable in crowded neighbourhoods
  • Rear Automatic Braking
  • Blind Spot Warning and Blind Spot Intervention
  • Lane Departure Warning and Intelligent Lane Intervention
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Driver attention alert
  • ProPILOT Assist adaptive cruise with steering support

The Patrol has not been tested by Euro NCAP or ANCAP, but its US-market twin, the 2025 Nissan Armada, received an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. Along with the strength of its body-on-frame construction, that offers reassurance to families who will spend a lot of time on the road.

Why Buying Used Is Smart

Importing a Patrol to Kolkata independently would involve sourcing a car in the Gulf, shipping it to an Indian port, paying customs duty, completing homologation and registering it in West Bengal. That is a long, complex process with plenty of room for error, and little protection if something goes wrong along the way.

Buying through Big Boy Toyz is far more straightforward. Every Patrol undergoes a multi-point inspection and comes with verified import and ownership documentation, and Kolkata buyers can contact BBT to arrange a viewing of the specific car before committing. Because the Y63 has been on sale only since November 2024, imported examples are nearly new. BBT's specialists can also explain the differences between the GCC trims, so Kolkata buyers know exactly what equipment they are getting before they commit.

Price Range in India

The Nissan Patrol Y63 is available through Big Boy Toyz at ₹2.50 crore to ₹3.30 crore, depending on engine, trim and condition. Kolkata buyers pay the same price as buyers across the rest of India.

VersionApprox. Price at BBT (₹)Notes
SE range (3.8L V6)From ₹2.50 croreThe new-generation Patrol at its most accessible, with eight seats and the full digital cabin
LE range (3.5L twin-turbo)Up to ₹3.30 croreTwin-turbo performance, with the LE Platinum City at the top

The Patrol is sold unregistered, so you will register it in West Bengal yourself. Road tax and registration charges vary by state, and BBT can advise on the process when you get in touch.

Ownership Cost

A Patrol is a long-term investment, and understanding its running costs helps you plan. These are the approximate annual costs for a Y63 in India, with notes for Kolkata owners:

  1. Service and maintenance: set aside ₹1.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh a year for specialist workshop visits, depending on how much the car is driven. Kolkata's humidity and long monsoon make regular checks of electrical connectors, brakes and the underbody a good habit.
  2. Insurance: a comprehensive policy is likely to be ₹5 lakh to ₹8 lakh a year, depending on the insured value. With waterlogging a familiar part of the monsoon, engine-protection cover is worth discussing with your insurer.
  3. Fuel: 12,000 km a year at roughly 6 to 8 km/l translates to about ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh in fuel. Mostly city driving will push costs towards the higher end.
  4. Tyres: 20 to 22-inch SUV tyres cost about ₹40,000 to ₹70,000 each. Potholes and uneven road surfaces after the rains make regular tyre inspections worthwhile.

Nissan India does not sell or officially service the Patrol Y63, so maintenance is carried out by specialist workshops familiar with imported vehicles. Kolkata buyers should identify a trusted specialist before taking delivery, and BBT's after-sales team can guide you towards suitable options and help with parts and service questions.

The Patrol's engineering works in your favour. Nissan's VR-series engines and 4x4 hardware have a strong reliability record in the GCC, where extreme heat and long desert drives are routine. That track record helps keep long-term ownership predictable, provided the car is maintained properly.

Competitors

Kolkata's luxury SUV buyers typically compare the Patrol Y63 with:

  • Toyota Land Cruiser LC300: the Patrol's eternal rival, with a strong reputation for reliability and resale
  • Lexus LX: a more luxurious version of the Land Cruiser, but less distinctive
  • Range Rover Vogue: the established luxury choice, plusher inside but costlier to run
  • Mercedes-Benz GLS: a comfortable, road-focused three-row SUV
  • Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600: the ultimate chauffeur-driven SUV, far more opulent but with none of the Patrol's off-road hardware

The Patrol's strengths are its rarity, its blend of modern technology and genuine off-road capability, and a heritage that resonates in a city that values substance. For Kolkata families who want something different from the usual luxury choices, it makes a compelling case.

The Brand Experience

The Patrol story began in 1951 with the 4W60, a rugged four-wheel-drive utility vehicle. Over seventy years it has become a byword for toughness across the Gulf, Australia and Africa, trusted by aid workers, explorers and families. In 1987 it won the diesel class at the Paris-Dakar Rally, finishing ninth overall as the first diesel to reach the top ten, and it later won the Australian Safari in 1992, 1993, 1995 and 2003.

In the Middle East, the Patrol is a cultural icon, the vehicle of choice for desert adventures and family life. The Y63 pays tribute to that history with puddle lamps that project "Since 1951" onto the ground, a detail that Kolkata, with its deep respect for heritage, is likely to appreciate.
