GMC Yukon Denali - The Ultimate American Full-Size Luxury SUV

Overview

The Yukon is GMC's full-size SUV, and the Denali badge marks its luxury flagship. Built on the same body-on-frame platform as the Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Tahoe, the Yukon Denali combines American V8 muscle with a cabin that can rival luxury sedans for quietness and comfort.

The current generation launched for the 2021 model year with independent rear suspension, a longer wheelbase and much more interior space. A major refresh for 2025 brought a new face, a 16.8-inch portrait touchscreen, an 11-inch driver display, a 15-inch head-up display and a more powerful diesel option. For Indian buyers, the Yukon Denali offers something genuinely different from the usual European and Japanese luxury SUVs: imposing proportions, a V8 that loves to cruise, and seven or eight genuinely spacious seats.

Model Features

  • 6.2L V8 petrol: 420 hp and 624 Nm, with a 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel (305 hp, 671 Nm) available in the US
  • 10-speed automatic with 2WD or 4WD
  • 16.8-inch portrait touchscreen with Google built-in, plus an 11-inch digital driver display
  • 15-inch multi-colour head-up display
  • Magnetic Ride Control on the Denali; Adaptive Air Ride on the Denali Ultimate
  • Bose Performance Series audio with speakers built into the front headrests
  • Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance (available, market dependent)
  • Seven-seat layout with second-row captain's chairs or eight seats with a bench
  • Heated and ventilated front seats, with massage on the Denali Ultimate

Variants

The Yukon range starts with the Elevation and AT4, but the luxury end of the lineup belongs to the Denali family:

  • Yukon Denali: 6.2L V8 or 3.0L diesel, Magnetic Ride Control, Denali-specific grille, wheels and interior
  • Yukon Denali Ultimate: 6.2L V8, 4WD, Adaptive Air Ride, 24-inch laser-etched wheels, topographic wood trim, Woodland Mahogany leather, massage seats and rear entertainment as standard
  • Yukon XL Denali / XL Denali Ultimate: the long-wheelbase versions, about 380 mm longer, with a much bigger boot behind the third row

Colours

The Yukon Denali is offered in a palette that suits its upscale character:

  • Summit White
  • Onyx Black
  • Sterling Metallic
  • Downpour Metallic
  • Titanium Rush Metallic
  • Volcanic Red Tintcoat
  • White Frost Tricoat (2025, Denali exclusive), replaced by Glacier White Tricoat for 2026

Fuel Efficiency and Mileage

The 6.2L V8 is about performance and effortless cruising rather than economy. The US EPA rates the 4WD Yukon at 16 mpg combined, which works out to about 6.8 km/l. In Indian conditions, expect:

  • City driving: approximately 4.5 to 5.5 km/l
  • Highway driving: approximately 7 to 8 km/l

Cylinder deactivation helps on steady highway runs, and the 91-litre fuel tank gives a usable touring range.

Design and Comfort

Few SUVs look as commanding as a Yukon Denali. At around 5.34 metres long, over 2 metres wide and nearly 1.95 metres tall, it towers over most luxury SUVs on Indian roads. The 2025 refresh added a bolder Denali grille, slim vertical LED lighting and a cleaner rear, while Denali Ultimate models wear 24-inch laser-etched wheels.

Comfort is where the Yukon truly shines. Independent rear suspension and Magnetic Ride Control (or Adaptive Air Ride on the Ultimate) soak up bad roads, and the cabin is genuinely spacious in all three rows. Behind the third row there are about 722 litres of space, growing to roughly 3,477 litres with both rear rows folded, numbers that put most three-row SUVs to shame.

Performance & Engine

The Yukon Denali's 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 produces 420 hp and 624 Nm, sent through a smooth 10-speed automatic. It is an old-school, big-hearted engine: relaxed at cruising speed, with a deep V8 growl when you press on. Despite weighing over 2.5 tonnes, the Denali reaches 100 km/h in roughly six and a half seconds.

In the US, the 3.0-litre Duramax inline-six diesel is also offered, with 305 hp and 671 Nm. Four-wheel-drive versions include a two-speed transfer case, and the Yukon can tow up to about 3,800 kg when properly equipped.

Interior & Technology

The refreshed Yukon Denali's cabin is built around a 16.8-inch portrait touchscreen running Google built-in, which brings Google Maps, Google Assistant and apps directly into the car. It is paired with:

  • An 11-inch configurable digital instrument cluster
  • A 15-inch multi-colour head-up display
  • An 8-inch rear climate touchscreen
  • Dual 12.6-inch rear-seat entertainment screens (standard on the Denali Ultimate)
  • Bose Performance Series audio with speakers in the front headrests
  • Open-pore wood, Denali-stitched leather and a panoramic sunroof on the Ultimate

Safety Features

The Yukon earned a five-star overall safety rating from the US NHTSA. Standard safety technology includes:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking, including Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking
  • Rear Cross Traffic Braking
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Side Bicyclist Alert and blind-zone alerts
  • HD Surround Vision cameras and trailering aids such as Transparent Trailer View
  • Front, side and curtain airbags covering all three rows

Why Buying Used Is Smart

GMC does not retail its vehicles in India, so the only way to own a Yukon Denali is through an import. Doing it yourself involves overseas sourcing, shipping, customs duties, homologation and registration, a process that can take months and carry surprises at every step.

At Big Boy Toyz, the Yukon Denali is already in India, inspected and ready. You can see the exact car, check its specification and documents, and drive it home far sooner, without the uncertainty of importing on your own.

Competitors

The Yukon Denali takes on the biggest luxury SUVs available in India:

The Yukon Denali's edge is its sheer space, V8 character and exclusivity on Indian roads.

The Brand Experience

GMC traces its roots back to the early 1900s and has built trucks and utility vehicles for more than a century as part of General Motors. The Denali name, taken from North America's tallest mountain, was introduced in the late 1990s and has since become GMC's byword for luxury, appearing on its most premium SUVs and pickups.

Today, the Denali sub-brand accounts for a large share of GMC's sales, and the Yukon Denali is its flagship family SUV, known across North America for combining professional-grade toughness with refined luxury.

Notable Brand Lineup

GMC's lineup is focused on trucks, SUVs and electric vehicles:

  • SUVs: Terrain, Acadia, Yukon, Yukon XL
  • Pickups: Canyon, Sierra 1500, Sierra HD
  • Electric: Hummer EV SUV and Pickup, Sierra EV

Across the range, Denali and Denali Ultimate represent the luxury peak, while AT4 badges mark the off-road focused versions.
