Volvo India Launches XC90 T8 Excellence Plug-In Hybrid at Rs. 1.25 Crore

The country’s first plug-in hybrid and the top-of-the-line SUV variant among its siblings, Volvo XC90 T8 Excellence, is now available in India at Rs. 1.25 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi). The masculine beast first saw the light of the day in the Shanghai Motor Show last year, that is, 2015. The unique thing about the car is that it’s not only the “most luxurious car” in the 89 years of history of Volvo but is also one of the costliest cars by the Swedish carmaker. Switzerland, Belgium, France and Luxemburg are the lucky markets that will get the four-seat variant of the XC90 T8.

The last year went really well for the Swedish automaker with the good response it received for the XC90 with diesel trim. Credit goes to the aggressive pricing, Delhi approved diesel engine and the state-of-the-art features that altogether make the deal attractive and beneficial.

Announcing the power-packed SUV for the Indian market, the Managing Director of Volvo Auto India, Tom von Bonsdorff, at the launch event said, “The XC90 T8 Excellence sets industry benchmarks for environment for environment friendly efficiency and emission while enveloping customer in first-class Swedish luxury. It is not only a segment-first but India's first plug-in hybrid SUV and we see a lot of interest from our more affluent customers, who prefer to experience 'responsible' luxury.”

Volvo XC90 T8 Excellence Plug-in Hybrid comes with automatic wheel drive and extracts energy from the T8 Twin-Engine Plug-n Hybrid Electric motor (2.0-litre turbocharged and supercharged petrol powertrain with 9.2kWh Lithium-ion battery). The engine is synced with an 8-speed automatic tranny and churns out a maximum output of 402bhp of power alongside a peak torque of 640Nm.

It can sprint to 100kmph from a standstill in 5.6 seconds by attaining a top speed of 120kmph. All this, considering the heavy body it comes with, seems to be one of the best figures offered till yet. As far as the safety is concerned, the SUV has got similar provisions as that of XC90 T8 Momentum, Inscription and R-Design.

The new member in the SUV lineup by Volvo is based on the modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) and saying that, the name of the Volvo XC90 Excellence along with the price it comes at bespeaks the richness on offer. The features provided in the vehicle not only state its lavishness but the royalty at the same time. The most advanced and the unique features among others include extra space for legroom and footrests, and individually electronically-adjustable recliner rear seats with ventilation and massage functions.

Apart from this attraction, Ambient Lighting, retractable control touchscreen, illuminated storage, a refrigerator with glass and bottle holders, folding tables, a separate insulated cup holder and above all crystal gear shifter and handmade crystal glasses from Orrefors, the another marked Swedish firm.

The price of Rs. 1.25 crore includes the price of the two charging stations that can be installed at the preferable locations. The SUV can be fully charged in a time span of 2.5 hours and the company claims that the Volvo XC90 T8 Excellence Plug-in Hybrid can travel a distance of 80 kilometers per day with emission-free driving.

Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class can be considered as the potential rival of T8 Excellence but the SUV has not direct competition from any of its competitors as none of the above SUVs come with a plug-in hybrid motor in India.
