Rising income levels and growing aspirations of people in emerging markets are creating a huge demand for premium class compact sedans that are spawning a host of new models. Following this trend, the German auto major BMW has recently unveiled a new series called BMW 1 series that will focus exclusively on this growing segment of the car market. The concept of this car was showcased last year at the Guangzhou Auto Exposition. With the official unveiling of 1 Series, BMW has now five car models that are produced locally in China. However, as of now, this beautiful car will be made available for the Chinese market only.
According to the trusted source, this model has been designed and tested at the BMW headquarters with special inputs from Chinese engineers so that it can drive in the varied driving conditions prevalent in China without a hitch. Official sources confirm that the new BMW 1 Series is based on the time tested UKL1 platform, which was widely used earlier to design Mini and the BMW X1 crossover models.
News filtering in also suggests that it will be a front wheel drive, though there is no information regarding the engine configuration and transmission setup of this compact sedan. But seeing other BMW models, we believe the engine that will propel this sexy beast is likely to feature a turbocharger to squeeze more juice out of this motor, thereby giving riders a mind blowing performance.
BMW will manufacture this car in China on a joint venture with BMW Brilliance Automotive. Company sources suggest that for enhancing its driving comfort, the new 1 Series will also feature amazing BMW ConnectDrive technologies patented by the company, which would provide a smooth and stress free driving experience. The four door sedan can easily accommodate five adults with adequate leg and head room for all the passengers. The overall look of the compact luxury vehicle is very trendy and purposeful with its unique dual kidney-shaped engine grill gracing the front and vertical chrome slats fixed across the same.
The sleek designed air dam and rotund fog lamps placed inside black-colored sockets enhance its stylish visage even further. Its side profile with a character line running at the shoulder level, tinted glasses and black-colored B and C pillars accord it an elegant stance. The curvy roofline gracefully slopes backwards and meshes well with the overall classy look of the car.
BMW officials were non-committal when queried about the price of the upcoming luxury sedan. There is no information as to when this car will come to India, but considering the similarity in market dynamics of China and India, we believe that sooner than later the footprints of BMW 1 Series will make their way to the huge Indian car market.
