Bulletproof Cars in India: FAQs
Get clear answers about bulletproof car prices, legality, protection levels, armouring process, timelines, and vehicle registration in India.
Legal
Yes, completely legal. Any Indian civilian can own, register, and drive a bulletproof vehicle. No MHA permission, no security category, no special permit is required for B4 or B6 level armoured vehicles. The vehicle is registered at your state RTO with an updated RC reflecting the armouring modification. The confusion arises because government security cover (Z+, Y, SPG) is a separate matter entirely — that is assigned by the government, not obtained privately.
No. A standard Indian driving licence for the vehicle category (LMV for cars) is all you need. An armoured car is not classified as a special vehicle under the Motor Vehicles Act. Your existing licence is valid.
Yes. Standard motor insurance covers armoured vehicles. The Insured Declared Value (IDV) is adjusted to include the armouring cost — typically ₹10–30 lakh higher than an unarmoured equivalent. Some insurers require the ballistic certificate as supporting documentation. Premiums are proportionally higher. BBT can connect you with insurers familiar with armoured vehicle policies.
Cost
B4 protection (handgun-rated) on a Toyota Fortuner costs approximately ₹15–22 lakh over the vehicle's current value. B6 protection (assault rifle-rated) costs approximately ₹25–35 lakh over base. These are armouring costs only — not the vehicle's purchase price. Contact Big Boy Toyz for an exact quote on your specific vehicle.
It depends on the vehicle's age and condition. For vehicles under three years old in good condition, conversion is generally more cost-effective — you keep your existing car and add protection. Pre-armoured vehicles available in BBT's showroom inventory eliminate the wait time and conversion process, which suits buyers who need protection immediately. Both routes result in a certified armoured vehicle.
Three ongoing cost differences: (1) Fuel — armouring adds weight, reducing fuel economy by 12–28% depending on level. (2) Insurance — premium is higher due to increased IDV. (3) Tyre costs — run-flat tyres cost more to replace than standard tyres. Standard servicing, brakes, and maintenance otherwise follow the vehicle's normal schedule.
Yes — in all Big Boy Toyz packages. NIJ and EN 1063 ballistic certification is included in the quoted price. This is the legal document required for RTO registration update and is your proof of protection level. No separate charge
Process
Standard timelines: B4 — 45 to 60 days from vehicle handover to certified delivery. B6 — 60 to 75 days. B7 — 90 to 120 days. Timelines depend on vehicle complexity and current workshop capacity. Contact BBT to check current lead times before committing.
No — discreet protection is the design goal. The exterior looks completely identical to the original vehicle. Ballistic steel is fitted behind interior panels, which are refitted after armouring. Ballistic glass is tinted to match OEM glass and sits in the same door channels. The only functional difference: windows can only open approximately 50mm to maintain seal integrity.
You can armour your existing car. BBT works with client-owned vehicles. Assessment criteria: vehicle should ideally be under five years old with under 80,000 km on the odometer and in good structural condition. Older vehicles may require suspension or structural prep work before armouring, adding cost and time. Most vehicles under five years old qualify with no pre-work.
This varies by manufacturer. Toyota and Mahindra dealerships in India have generally been more accommodating than European brands regarding modified vehicles. BBT advises buyers individually on how to approach their specific dealer — and in many cases, the warranty period has already expired on older vehicles, making this a non-issue.
Vehicle
The Toyota Fortuner accounts for approximately 95% of civilian bulletproofing requests in India. The reasons: strong chassis, widely available service network, established resale market, and a vehicle profile that doesn't attract unnecessary attention. The Land Cruiser 300 is the most popular choice for VVIP and government clients
Yes. BBT handles armouring for Range Rover, Mercedes GLS, BMW X5 and X7, Toyota Vellfire, Lexus LX, and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. The process is more complex and expensive on luxury vehicles due to more integrated electronics and tighter panel tolerances, but the result is the same — a fully certified, visually unchanged armoured vehicle.
Armouring adds 120–300 kg depending on protection level. This affects: acceleration (0– 100 km/h takes 1–3 seconds longer), fuel economy (12–28% worse), and steering feel (heavier). Suspension is upgraded as part of the process. Top speed and air conditioning are recalibrated to the new weight. The vehicle is fully driveable and safe.
