Ballistic protection levels explained
B4 vs B6 vs B7 — Which Protection Level
Do You Need?
The most important decision in armouring isn't which car — it's which level. Here's how to choose the right one.
Choose the Right Protection Level
What each level actually protects against
B4 — Handgun and pistol protection
Stops: 9mm Parabellum, .44 Magnum, .357 SIG, 12-gauge buckshot
- Glass thickness: 32–38mm
- Steel plate grade: Armox 440T or equivalent
- Weight added on Fortuner: approx. 140 kg
- Armouring cost over base (Fortuner): ₹15–22 lakh
- Turnaround time: 45–60 days
Best for: Businesspeople, jewellery traders, cash-in-transit, private protection for medium-risk profiles. Handles most realistic civilian threat scenarios in India — snatch attempts, robbery, political violence at handgun level.
B6 — Assault rifle protection (Recommended)
Stops: AK-47 (7.62x39), M16 (5.56x45), INSAS, G3, most common military rifles
- Glass thickness: 42–50mm
- Steel plate grade: Armox 500T or equivalent
- Weight added on Fortuner: approx. 220 kg
- Armouring cost over base (Fortuner): ₹25–35 lakh
- Turnaround time: 60–75 days
Best for — recommended for most Indian buyers: Politicians, senior government officials, high-profile industrialists, individuals operating in conflict-prone regions. Protects against the most common military-grade threat in South Asia. 95% of BBT civilian armouring orders are B6.
B7 — Armour-piercing rifle protection
Stops: 7.62x54R armour-piercing, .30-06 AP — high-powered military sniper rounds
- Glass thickness: 55–70mm+
- Steel plate grade: Armox 600T or ceramic composite
- Weight added: 300–450 kg
- Armouring cost over base: On request
- Turnaround time: 90–120 days
Best for — rare in civilian use: Military, senior government ministers with high-level security threat, VIP protection in active conflict zones. Not practical for daily civilian use in India — the weight significantly impacts driveability and fuel economy.
Comparison — all three levels
How to choose the right level for your situation
Choose B4 if: Your primary concern is protection against handguns and sidearms. You operate in an urban environment with low-to-medium risk exposure. You want minimum weight impact and the most natural driving experience.
Choose B6 if: You operate in an environment where rifle fire is a realistic risk — highprofile political figure, senior executive, high-value commodity trade. You want the most practical all-round protection for Indian conditions. This is BBT's most commonly ordered level.
Choose B7 if: YYou face a documented threat from armour-piercing ammunition — this is almost exclusively a government or military requirement. Contact BBT for a confidential assessment.
